The Emory Chapters of AWIS and NOBCChE are celebrating Black History Month with a social media campaign. The campaign, #EmChemBlackHistory2020, encourages research labs in chemistry to learn about an assigned historical Black STEM figure from throughout history. Information on these figures is also displayed throughout the chemistry building in laboratory offices and on information cards displayed throughout the Science Commons.

More Kimberly Marroquin writes, “This year is of even higher significance as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment (1920), which granted American women the right to vote, and the 150th anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment (1870) which granted the right of Black men to vote.”
Labs at Emory and elsewhere can participate by Tweeting facts and images of historical Black STEM figures throughout history. In collaboration with the department’s Spectrum program, the department Twitter @EmoryChem will also be Tweeting small actions and learning goals that labs and individuals can take to learn about and support Black STEM scholars. The activities will culminate in a trivia night event on campus.
Members of the Emory community can also participate by stopping by the Black History Month display on the second floor of the Science Commons and leaving an inspirational note.
